It is often said that music soothes the soul. Perhaps the expression bests describes the feeling the San Diego based DJ ALA gets when meticulously crafting a session that takes the audience into a deep and uplifting musical journey. Influenced by soul, funk, and disco at an early age, ALA was taught in the San Francisco Bay Area to use the turntable as his instrument to relay the message in the music. No one, including him, could ever imagine the after school hobby would evolve to a passionate commitment to the art. Arnel L. Aguinaldo (ALA) cherishes his experience, which dates back to 1989, as a messenger and a conscientious motivator of the crowd. Although his eclectic taste allowed him to master his skills in hip-hop, funk, and house formats, ALA insists his passion is rooted from a musical influence molded from icons such as Stevie Wonder, EWF, MJ, and Prince. Yet, as with any worthy endeavor, ALA always strived to redefine his musical identity and in the late 90's discovered an affinity for the powerful music of the underground. DJ's such as Tony Humphries, Blaze, Masters at Work, and other influential House notables became sources of inspiration for ALA's sound as demonstrated in his soulful collections, Mar Del Sol and G Lounge. It is his signature sound that he hopes will take listeners in a journey from a funky frenzy to a deep, sexy, & soulful euphoria. Determined to spread the love, ALA created djala.com in 2003 and recently established collaborations with ilovehousemusic.com, KhaiMar Music, and Undefeated Recordings. His soulful sets have been aired around the globe through DI.fm, SubgroundFM, and Planetsoul. In 2003, ALA headlined "G Lounge" every Saturday night at one of San Diego's top upscale venues, Galileo 101. Soon thereafter, he and Brian Cabalic started a Thursday night called Urge at the legendary Rich's. ALA has played along side with such House luminaries as Roy Davis Jr., Deep Swing, Louie Vega, Franky Boissy, Ruben Mancias, Halo, and more. While holding local residencies at Aubergine and Shaker Room, ALA still manages to tour the country headlining guest spots from San Francisco to New York and even a night at the Playboy Mansion. ALA is currently working as the Entertainment Content Manager for Undefeated Recordings, hosting the weekly Undefeated Sessions mixshow featuring fellow residents Halo, Marlon D, Jask, Mateo & Matos, Matt Mau, Kemal, Alix Alvarez, David Harness, and more. Tune in every Tuesday on www.di.fm and Thursdays on www.vmix.fr for exclusive sets by ALA and the Undefeated crew. ALA's motivation is driven by a musical style that he
believes is simply a medium in which elements of soul, jazz, funk, and
disco can flourish and be heard in infinite proportions. It is an indescribable
feeling that ALA can only express in the mix. It is music with a message...music
for your inner soul. |
In
1989, at age of 13, Brian’s exposure to dance music started with
a musical genre known as “Freestyle”. Freestyle was a fusion
of 70's disco and 80's break dancing music, influenced also by sampling
found in Hip-Hop. The electro funk sound was refined by adding Latin American
rhythms and a syncopated drum sound eventually evolving into the style
that caught Brian’s attention with hits like “Lookout Weekend”
(1989) by Debbie Deb, “Summertime Summertime” (1986) by Nocera,
and the freestyle classic "Let the music play" (1983) by Shannon. Brian has played in some of San Diego's most famous spots including E-Street Alley, Ole Madrid, Onyx Room, The Red C Lounge, Rich’s, and the Legendary Juke Joint Cafe. His diverse musical selection and ability to move crowds has propelled him into the Los Angeles house scene earning a guest appearance at Marques Wyatt's legendary Sunday ritual, DEEP. "The whole experience of DEEP is eye opening. Go there with an open-mind. It will challenge what you already know, or thought you knew about house music”. Brian has spent the last 4 years refining his eclectic style of house which many say fall into the confines of deep and soulful to jazz infested beats to afro-Latin rhythms to disco funk grooves. Heavily influenced by DJs and producers such as Tony Humphries, Marques Wyatt, Little Louie Vega, and Kerri Chandler, Brian has become one of the key purveyors of deep, soulful, and uplifting grooves on the west coast. |
